The Dyson Air Multiplier AM06 desk fan is a personal cooling fan that does not look like a fan at all. With no visible blades, it uses a turbine-like system that sucks air in from the holes in the base, and sends it up faster to a big ring mounted above. Giving you a steady stream of air, projected straight out of the ring.
Instead of using blades, Dyson fans use patented Air Multiplier technology for powerful airflow projection. Air is accelerated through an annular aperture, drawing in surrounding air to project a high-velocity cooling airflow. And with no blades, the airflow is smooth – not choppy.
The Dyson AM06 desk fan works best in a small room for personal cooling, not great for a large room. To spend $300+ for a desk fan is almost a crazy thought but it might be a consideration if you need a fan that is quieter and keeps you cool during those hot summer nights sleep. It may be quieter but it is not silent!
Out of the box, it’s as easy as aligning the numbers on the base with the fan top and turning it until you hear a click and you’re ready to use.
The fan comes with a remote which is great and easy to use as there aren’t many buttons on it. It provides 10 precise airflow settings, as well as one touch oscillation control. The remote is rubberised and magnetised to store on top of the fan. The AM06 can be programmed to turn off after preset intervals ranging from 15 minutes to 9 hours. There is a small digit LED display on the front of the fan base that shows the fan speed. The fan can also be tilted forward or upward.
There are a few concerns I have with the Dyson AM06:
- it is very light and the base it not very wide so it is very easy to knock over which I did one time.
- half of the functions of the fan are controlled by the remote, so you better not lose the remote as you can only turn the fan on/off and increase/decrease fan speed from the base.
- the fan remote doesn’t have bumps/indicates on the buttons making it difficult to use in the dark.
It may be quieter than traditional blade fans but the Dyson AM06 does make some noise especially at the level 5 speed and up (sounds like the fan from a desktop computer), the noise does increases are you increase the speed. Not sure why they bothered with the lower speeds (first few speeds) as you can barely feel anything even when you have your face right up to it.

Dyson Air Multiplier Technology
AM06 uses Dyson’s patented Air Multiplier technology for powerful airflow projection, with no chopping blades. With Air Multiplier technology, air is drawn in at the base of the machine. It is accelerated through a 2.5mm annular aperture, generating a high-velocity jet of air. This passes over an airfoil-shaped ramp, channelling its direction and creating areas of low pressure behind and around the fan. The change in pressure forces surrounding air to be drawn into the airflow – called inducement and entrainment. There are no chopping blades, so there’s no buffeting – just a powerful stream of smooth cooling air.

Streamlined air channels reduce airflow turbulence, making AM06 75% quieter than its predecessor, the AM01. Motor noise and vibration have been isolated using a Helmholtz cavity — an acoustically engineered motor casing that reduces noise.
